Salutations to all my readers! It gives me great pleasure to present a recipe I really love today: Teriyaki Yellowtail. A sweet and savoury teriyaki glaze enhances the rich flavors of yellowtail in this dish, which is easy to make and incredibly filling. This recipe delivers a flavor of Japanese culinary heritage right in your home, regardless of your level of experience as a chef. Start now!

Yellowtail, also known as hamachi, is a beloved fish in Japan and has become increasingly popular in the US and other countries. It has a mild, buttery flavor and a delicate texture that makes it perfect for sushi or sashimi.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy yellowtail is to simply slice it thinly and serve it with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger. Only if you I could get sashimi grade yellowtail.

I love grilling or broiling yellowtail with a teriyaki sauce and miso glaze for a sweet and savory twist.

No matter how you prepare it, yellowtail is a delicious and versatile fish that is sure to impress your guests.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pieces yellowtail fillets
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 tsp flour (for dusting)
  • 1 tsp oil

For the Teriyaki Sauce:

  • 1 tbsp sake
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1/2 tbsp sugar

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Yellowtail:
    • Begin by patting the yellowtail fillets dry with paper towels. This is crucial to ensure you get a nice sear.
    • Lightly season both sides of the fillets with salt and dust them with a thin layer of flour. This not only adds flavor but also helps to create a slightly crisp texture on the surface when cooked.
  2. Make the Teriyaki Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the sake, soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. This blend will form your delicious teriyaki glaze.
  3. Cook the Yellowtail:
    • Heat the oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the yellowtail fillets. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the fillets are golden and just cooked through.
  4. Apply the Teriyaki Sauce:
    • Once the yellowtail is cooked, reduce the heat to low and pour the teriyaki sauce mixture over the fillets. Allow the sauce to simmer gently, spooning it over the fish continuously, until the sauce thickens and becomes a glaze that beautifully coats the fillets.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the teriyaki yellowtail hot, garnished with a sprinkle of green onions or sesame seeds if desired. It pairs wonderfully with steamed rice and vegetables.

Tips for Perfect Teriyaki Yellowtail:

  • Fish Freshness: Ensure your yellowtail is fresh for the best flavor and texture. Fresh fish should smell like the ocean, not fishy.
  • Control Your Heat: Keep the heat at medium to avoid burning the sauce while allowing the fish to cook through evenly.
  • Sauce Consistency: If your sauce isn’t thickening, combine a small amount of cornstarch with water and add it to the sauce to help thicken it.

Q&A:

Q: Can I use frozen yellowtail fillets for this recipe? A: Yes, frozen yellowtail can work well. Just ensure it’s fully thawed and patted dry before seasoning and cooking.

Q: What can I substitute for mirin if I don’t have it? A: If you don’t have mirin, you can use a sweet white wine or a mixture of white wine with a little sugar as a substitute.

Q: How can I ensure my fish doesn’t stick to the pan? A: Make sure your pan is hot before adding the oil, and then add the fish. This helps create a sear that prevents sticking. Also, use a non-stick pan or a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet.

I hope you enjoy making and savoring this Teriyaki Yellowtail as much as I do. It’s a dish that brings simple ingredients together in a beautiful harmony of flavors, perfect for a satisfying meal any day of the week. Happy cooking, and may your dishes always bring joy to those who taste them!
